how to finish a stripped cedar chest?
I read your answer on how to strip an old cedar chest. I had esactly the same question. After I get the cedar chest stripped, what would be the best way to finish the chest?
Are you going to finish with a natural finish or stain for color? If you want to stain select a tone you like and sand the trunk with 220 grit paper and then stain. After you let the stain dry over night you're ready to apply a sealer coat over the stain. An easy beginner product is polyurethane like like Varathane or many other brands that are solvent based and go on easy and provide a good finish. Buy the best natural bristle brush you can find and apply an even coat, let it dry over night at least, then lightly sand with 220 or 320 paper and remove all dust and brush on another coat and you're finished. If you want you can give it more coats but be sure you sand between coats.
