LED lighting- Dead LEDs?
They say LED lights last 1000s of more hours than conventional lights. But I see too many dead LEDs in the signal lights. Why?
LEDs generally work really well in the cold and the small, low power diodes typically used in the traffic lights last on average 30,000 hours and up to 50,000 hours. That compares to a halogen traffic light which lasts only 3,000 hours maximum. Using LEDs can save over $600 a year per intersection. Think of it this way, if one light emitting diode on a traffic light goes out, so what? There are hundreds more on the green signal, but if one incandescent halogen goes out, traffic stops.
Now, why do some go out? Many LED lights go out if exposed to the elements like water or snow cannot remain lit. The covering ought to catch most of the elements, but may not be perfect. I recently bought LEDs for my home, and the vendor specifically noted whether a given light could be used on its own outdoors or not.
