99 SeaDoo GTS "slips" under heavy load.?
I recently bought a 99 SeaDoo GTS. It seemed fine at first, but I picked up a 68" towable for the kids and with a couple people on the ski and a couple on the towable it seems to, what I would call "slip", engine over-revs with no real acceleration. You can feather the throttle and get up to speed pretty quickly, but without the tube you can punch it, even with 3 people on, and it blasts off. Is this normal or does it sound like there may be a problem?
Would bet that your impeller has got some dings in it, or the wear ring is wore out. Its a little hard to see, but if you get a flashlight, crouch down, and look up into the jet nozzle, you might be able to see if your impeller has been damaged. You could also try removing the nozzle to get a better look. If you're not that mechanical, you should take it to a Sea-Doo dealer. Will probably cost you about $500.00 for new impeller and wear ring, but will fix your problem. If you replace the impeller, and plan on using the Doo for towing a tube most of the time, you could get a different pitch impeller, that would improve the performance. Just remember...higher top end speed = less "jump" out of the hole. More jump out of the hole = lower top end speed. Variable pitch impellers help this problem, but realistically your GTS isn't going to win any races anyway, might as well make it a good tow boat.
